Encode VADPCM

Usage:

vadpcm encode [options...] <input> <output.aifc>

Description

Encodes an audio file as VADPCM. The input file can be AIFF, AIFF-C, or WAVE. The input has to be 16-bit mono; other bit depths and stereo are not supported.

Options

--assignment=<algorithm>

Changes the method for generating the predictor codebook. You should not normally need to change this. Possible values are:

  • auto (default): Chooses one of codebook generation algorithms based on the encoding parameters.
  • outlier: Iteratively create new predictors from frames with the highest prediction error.
  • lbg-incremental: Incrementally split a predictor into multiple predictors.

--debug

Print debug messages.

--dither=<type>

Apply dithering. Dithering adds a small amount of noise to the output in exchange for reduced distortion.

  • none: No dithering.
  • rectangular (default): Uniform random noise with peak-to-peak magnitude 1 LSB.

Dithering is recommended for most use cases, but you may want to turn it off for instrument samples.

-p, -predictors=<N>

The VADPCM codec uses a codebook containing 1-16 predictors. This option sets the number of predictors to N. Using more predictors may improve the audio quality somewhat, but the effect is small. The default number of predictors is 4.

--quiet

Only print warnings and errors.
